ENERGY
Awiai expanded into energy projects with the award of the USAID-sponsored pilot electrification projects in the Philippines, the VRESCO and MORESCO electrification projects in 1972. This initial assignment was followed by project assignments from the National Electrification Administration, so that during the succeeding twenty-five years, the firm was commissioned to provide long range system planning, detailed design, construction supervision and material procurement assistance to at least 100 of the total 119 electric cooperatives existing in the country today. In the early 1980's, when the government embarked in the massive development of alternative sources of energy, particularly mini-hydro and geothermal power plants, the firm was assigned several
projects which included identification of project sites, preparation of feasibility studies and, when found feasible, the eventual detailed engineering design and construction supervision of these power plants. The firm's experience in power generation is highlighted by the completion of a feasibility study and preliminary engineering design of 300 MW/ 100 MW power generation projects for the electric cooperatives of the Ilocos region. In 1991 Awiai completed its first turnkey [Engineering, Operation & Maintenance, Project Management, Architecture, Information Technology, Equipment and Construction services provided] energy project with the commissioning of a 20Mw hydroelectric project in Canada. Currently Awiai is undergoing a turnkey award on a 36 MW hydroelectric project in Canada, and detailed engineering review on a 150Mw combined cycle project in Bangladesh.
