Since the inception of Awiai in 1956 the firm has been dedicated to the environment and environmental projects. A landmark environmental project is the Bicol River Basin development program which includes the development of two towns in Sorsogon, namely Irosin and Juban. This project has a population of about 650,000; and some 3,600 hectares of fertile lands suited to rice production. Schistosomiasis is prevalent in the area. It also has no adequate irrigation and transportation network facilities. Feasibility study includes environmental and social impacts including the construction of flood control system on areas frequently subjected to flooding. Analyses of the various major and complementary environmental impacts were also conducted. Presently the firm is conducting environmental impact assessments for a Greenfield project in Jamaica.
